Adopting a Pet

In order to be considered for an adoption you must:
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have the knowledge and consent of all adults living in your household
  • Have a landlord's name and phone number if you rent
  • Understand that Heartland Humane Society must approve your application and that we thoroughly screen and check all applicants including vet and personal references as well as landlord approval (as applicable).

Do you own or rent?
Does your landlord allow pets?
Does everyone in your household know and accept the fact that you are considering adopting a new pet?
Does anyone in the house have allergies to animals?
Do you have a fenced yard?
Do you plan on declawing your cat?
Are your current pets spayed/neutered?
Are your current pets up-to-date on vaccinations?
Do you understand that a pet can be an 18 year commitment, must be regularly exercised, groomed and vetted, and may cost $300-500 annually for care?
Do you realize that your new pet may take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to become adusted to its surroundings, and may require extra patience and training during this stressful time?
